Since its first version release, the Sony PlayStation 3 is Sony’s best console yet, but this high tech console comes with praises and complaints which have never stopped. The notorious red and yellow lights are probably two of the most common faults afflicting the PS3 console.

Owners themselves can sometimes effectively mitigate or avoid the catastrophic failure of their game system, which if sent back to Sony can cost hundreds of pounds to fix.

First establish what is going on with the console, if the power status light on your console flashes or blinks from green to yellow and back to green, this is known as the ‘yellow light of death’; by the same token if you experience a power status light that flashes red after using your console for three or more minutes and then shuts down, then you are likely to be experiencing the ‘red light of death’.

Both these faults are believed to be the processor getting so hot during heavy use that the solder points on the GPU liquefies and over time loses its connection with the motherboard.  Sony’s answer to this problem is that this yellow indicator warning light can be caused for a variety of reasons, but they do not explain any further.

The red light error may also be caused by overheating or a hard drive failure, having said that, a hard drive ought to last on average at least three to five years.  The yellow light of death (YLOD) is probably the more serious which indicates an internal fault needing a professional PlayStation 3 repair and if caught early enough all is not lost.

Much has been written about the problems that can arise with the PS3 due to overheating especially if an ardent gamer is using it for long periods of time, but owners of this powerful and sophisticated console can take some simple steps to try to prevent serious damage.

As with any commodity that generates heat, care should be taken to ensure that the air vents on the console are not obstructed in any way; one should allow at least four inches of clearance on all sides of the PlayStation 3 for adequate ventilation.

Don’t tuck the console into corners of the room as these areas promote heat build up, remove the console from any cabinets and away from other stacked electrical equipment and, more importantly, check for dust on and around the air vents as well as inside the console, as this can choke your console of air, thus preventing it from cooling down, and ultimately leading to fan failure.
