In an interview, the 51-year old American rider said, "I'm ready. I was asked and I accepted". He was also quick to point out that it is his desire to restore the confidence and reputation back to the sport of cycling. "It is now or never to act".

He also added, "Riders do not understand that if we continue like this there will soon be no money in cycling."

LeMond is one of the members of the cycling pressure group called Change Cycling Now or CCN. The group is composed of former riders, sports journalists, and an Australian cycling sponsor, SKINS. The lobby organisation held its two-day summit in London last weekend and discussed possible reforms and proposals with regards to how the Union is handling the issues concerning the sport of cycling. CCN is hoping to pose radical change in the Union and supports LeMond in his bid.

LeMond is known to be highly critical of the incumbent UCI president Pat McQuaid and his predecessor, Hein Verbruggen. In October, he wrote an open letter in Facebook asking the former to resign from his post. "If Pat McQuaid really loves cycling, as he claims, he would have resigned," he wrote.

On the other hand, McQuaid has said in a separate interview that he is seeking for another term in the Union.

This year, the world of cycling has been shaken after the United States Anti-Doping Agency accused the seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong with systematic doping during his career. He has been stripped off with all of his titles and has been banned to join any cycling competitions for life. This then restored LeMond as the only American to have won the Tour de France crowns.
