Every garden should have a few lavender bushes, some varieties flower from mid-June to September, and the silver foliage deserves a space on its own merit, they are beautiful. This shrub keeps itself neat and tidy and need just a single annual pruning also they are relatively free from pests and disease, furthermore these plants withstand drought extremely well.
There are in excess of 50 species of Lavender plants and they come in a wide variety of sizes, hardiness, flowers and foliage. English lavender makes an excellent low level hedge, maintenance is simple, the scent is spectacular and the mass of flowers is truly stunning, furthermore lavender attracts a wide variety of insects.
Dutch lavender is longer than English lavender and when they mature are a height and spread of abut 3 feet, which of course makes them ideal as low hedging plants. Producing dark purple flowers of up to 1 and a half inches long, they are not so easy to grow in temperate climates such as the UK they do not survive our wet winters very well. They grow very well in free draining soils, and are best suited to being a specimen plant in a pot or tub.
Another favourite with gardeners all over the UK is the begonia plant, but regardless of type cannot withstand freezing cold temperatures and do require appropriate winter care. If you live in areas prone to freezing temperatures, then you should be wintering begonias indoors.
To enjoy begonias in the garden each year, they should be dug up and stored indoors during winter until the return of warmer weather in spring, dig them up in Autumn, dry them out for about a week, and to prevent problems with fungus or powdery mildew dust them with sulpher powder prior to storage, begonias should be stored in a cool, dark, dry location.
If the geranium plant is one of your favourites then you can get them from any garden centre or nursery when you get your plants home let them rest for 24 hours, by covering them with horticultural fleece and leave in a sheltered spot in the garden, and if large sized geraniums they can be planted out straight away as long as the risk of frost has passed.
