In a specialty coined Diabesity surgery, Dr. Jorge Maytorena specializes in bariatric surgery and long-term patient management of individuals diagnosed with obesity-related diabetes as in many individuals, one is directly related to the other.

With surgical privileges at Mexico's Hospital de la Mujer, located in Mexicali, Mexico, Dr. Jorge Maytorena is able to perform a wide range of bariatric surgical procedures, including lap band, advanced laparoscopic surgery, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass and is certified in the latest allergen gastric band procedures.

One of the newest laparoscopic obesity procedures is called gastric plication. The procedure is currently undergoing lengthy clinical trials in the United States, but has been approved and is under practice in countries outside of the United States, including Mexico.

Gastric Plication in a Nutshell

One of the most recent developments in bariatric surgery today, gastric plication is a reversible procedure that also increases and encourages long-term health and wellness in weight loss, long-term weight loss management, and a gradual return to help the dieting and eating habits.

The gastric plication technique is a form of bariatric surgical weight loss surgery performed via laparoscope, which means smaller incisions, faster healing time, and reduced chance of complications. Similar to a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass, gastric plication reduces the amount of food that a person can eat. A restrictive procedure, gastric plication, like other forms of bariatric surgery, reduces the overall size of the stomach.

During the procedure, the stomach is folded lengthwise to create a long, thin tube, reducing the overall size of the stomach by about 60% to 80%. The small intestine is also left alone where it connects to the stomach, offering full and normal digestive function, breakdown of foods and nutrients, as well as absorption of nutrients by the small intestine.

Advantage of Gastric Plication

One of the biggest advantages of this new procedure of gastric Plication is that it's reversible.  Sutures can be removed from the folded over stomach if required at a later point in time, and full restoration and capacity of the stomach organ is restored.

Ongoing studies have shown that patients undergoing a gastric plication process display at acquit weight loss coupled with some of the lowest complication rates of all different types of bariatric procedures.  Because the nutrition absorbing capacity of the stomach remains intact, individuals don't experience the food intolerance, or common "dumping syndrome" often associated with other bariatric surgical procedures.

The surgery is designed to reduce obesity-related co-morbidities including hypertension and diabetes. Individuals with dead body mass index (BMI a) of over 27 and diagnosed with one or more obesity-related medical conditions are excellent candidates for the surgical procedure.
