Queen City Toastmasters: Speakers Wanted!
Dickinson, ND – June 1, 2011 – The Queen City Toastmasters club is looking to expand its visibility amid the economic growth in western North Dakota. This Dickinson, ND club is a chapter of Toastmasters International, which is a worldwide organization committed to “making effective communication a reality.” During the summer months,so that attendees can efficiently engage in lunchtime learning, meetings will be held at Noon on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at the Dickinson Elks Lodge, 501 Elks Drive, Dickinson, ND 58601.The duration of each meeting is one hour.
“We are all speakers in one context or another,” club officer Deb Kerner explained, “and getting involved in Toastmasters provides a framework for both personal and professional development.” According to Kerner, the club would like to be a forum of learning and listening for both longstanding and recent residents of the Dickinson area. Kerner stated, “It would be great to have a local attorney, for instance, listening to a speech delivered by an oilman from Texas.” Kerner emphasized the value of the constructive feedback that is typical for the meetings of the Queen City Toastmasters.
The educational materials of Toastmasters International pertain to making improvements as a speaker and a leader. “These two areas are intricately linked,” Kerner explained, “because moving an audience in an ethical direction with good ideas requires the skills to connect vocally with that same audience.” Dr. Eric Grabowsky, who recently joined the club, is an assistant professor of communication at Dickinson State University. Grabowsky stated, “In its focusing upon the basics of content, structure, and delivery, the program of growth given by Toastmasters International for public speaking is solid.” Having moved to the Dickinson area in August of 2010, Grabowsky highlighted the ways in which the Queen City Toastmasters club has already been a crossroads for building new professional relationships. The membership of the club includes persons from a variety of professions, such as financial planning, water management, and real estate.
