ANAHEIM, Calif., (June 03, 2011) The St. Catherine’s Academy marching band participated in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. on May 30, 2011.  With members as young as second

grade, the Marching Knights were the youngest band participating in this year’s parade and the only military boarding school from California.

“It was truly an honor to participate in the National Memorial Day Parade,” says Mrs. Hope Hynes, St. Catherine’s Academy’s band director.  “We are so proud of our students and their hard work.

They put in many hours of practice, planning, and fundraising to make this happen.”

The National Memorial Day Parade, presented by the American Veterans Center, is held annually in Washington DC, and is an opportunity for thousands of patriotic Americans to come together and honor

those who have sacrificed so much in service to our country.  The event celebrates all those who have served in uniform from the American Revolution to Operation Iraqi Freedom, and seeks to educate

the public about the meaning of this hallowed day.

While in the Washington, D.C., students from this California military boarding school visited a variety of important historical sites and landmarks, including Arlington National Cemetery where

cadets laid a wreath on the grave of SSG Marc Arizmendez who graduated from St. Catherine’s in 1994.  Arizmendez’s mother Amelia traveled with the band.

Approximately 23 2nd-8th graders participate in what is one of the youngest marching bands in Orange County.  Students practice daily after school.  They have the chance to show off their talents

during four local parades and a variety of school events.  The Marching Knights have been a tradition at St. Catherine’s since the early 1900s.

Marching band is just one option for musical enrichment at St. Catherine’s.  Students can also participate in piano and guitar lessons.  About 50% of students participate in some sort of

extracurricular music lessons, and the entire student body attends music class at least weekly.  “Music options are very strong at St. Catherine’s, especially for a K-8 school.  It’s a great

foundation for young students,” say Mrs. Hynes.

The only military boarding school in California for boys in kindergarten – 8th grade, St. Catherine’s Academy is an independent Catholic school with a military tradition for boys in kindergarten

through 8th grade.  The school is owned and operated by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose and offers both day and boarding opportunities.
