Norfolk MP Liz Truss replaces Owen Paterson as Defra secretary, a move that could bring water more to the forefront of farming.  The move comes as part of David Cameron’s major cabinet reshuffle.  With an interest in food and farming issues in her constituency, particularly surrounding food and water security, after the last drought, Truss arranged for farmers to meet ministers to discuss concerns about water supplies for irrigated crops in Norfolk and Suffolk. She has also called for greater protection for farmland from flooding.

A clearer focus on water supplies for farming will be welcomed across the farming sector in the wake of the recent Defra water consultation, potential limitations on water extraction and with impending rises in mains water rates for farmers.  A company that helps farmers to manage their own water supplies, Peterborough-based plastic water tank specialist, Enduramaxx, welcomes a keener focus on water in farming.

Enduramaxx established its brand through the supply of dedicated plastic water tanks, vertical storage tanks, and cone bottom tanks (conical tanks), amongst others, and provides farmers with dedicated rainwater harvesting solutions.  By collecting the huge volumes of rainwater from farm roofs, water can be stored in rugged rainwater tanks for when it’s needed most.  The company’s horizontal and vertical rainwater tanks are manufactured using a single piece of rotationally-moulded, uv-stabilised polyethylene which stores water safely and in optimum conditions for long periods of time.

More and more farmers are looking at rainwater harvesting as a viable tactic to put them more in control of their own water supplies and the latest round of FFIS grant funding incorporates rainwater harvesting equipment within it’s remit of eligible equipment.
