London, UK, January 18, 2012 — Not everybody is fortunate enough to be able to afford a brand new sofa. Fortunately, Redditch based charity Boomerang, has announced that it will be giving away free sofas this winter to help low income people. Like many charities, Boomerang accepts donations of unwanted furniture that may otherwise end up in landfill. While many people can’t bear to have their homes furnished with the fashions of yesteryear, the needy may find that donated furniture is the only way they can turn their basic living quarters into something resembling a “home”.
A spokesman for Boomerang said: “Giving away free sofas is possible because of the generosity of donators in Redditch, and the fact that all staff are volunteers.” He also added that “with no wages bill, and premises which are not too expensive, (our) items are priced very low. For example, a table and chairs cost from £15 and beds from £15. Donated goods are priced so that people on low income can afford them".
Boomerang hope to give away much of the furniture stored in its warehouse in case the town is again hit by bad weather, as it was this time last year. During 2010/11’s record-breaking winter, the charity was forced to throw away a number of furniture items after melted snow leaked through the roof, damaging much of the charity's stock.
Manager Pauline Thorne said: “Before the bad weather comes, we would rather give away the sofas free of charge that we have no room for rather than to have them ruined as they were last year. Please come and see if the free sofas can be of use to you.”
Charities like Boomerang help to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, by collecting old household items free of charge and then selling them at low prices to the needy. All income made in the process goes into maintaining the overhead costs associated with running the charity.
People wishing to donate household goods to Boomerang, should call the charity on 01527 68250. Anyone wanting to pick up a free sofa should visit the shop in Beaufort Street, Redditch.
