Marburg, Germany, February 16, 2012 — Bright, spacious and friendly -the new location of the SAMCON Prozessleittechnik GmbH can be described thus. The company, based near Marburg (Hesse) in Germany, has moved its production and storage facilities into the premises of a former cigar factory. The cigar factory was built at the beginning of the last century and was used at the time as a production facility by a cigar manufacturer. Now it contains modern workplaces, a production hall and storage facilities of the manufacturer of video cameras for explosion risk areas.
“Due to the favourable order position in recent years our existing production capacities are no longer sufficient. We were faced with the question of whether we should put up a new building on a ‘greenfield’ site or refurbish an existing building for our purposes. The choice finally fell on the local former cigar factory. As the building had stood empty for many years extensive modernisation work was necessary, but we are now in a position to say that we are very pleased with the decision. On the one hand, we are able to manufacture very quickly and effectively to meet time-critical orders in the short term. On the other hand, our employees benefit from the bright and modern workplaces. As an established family business we are naturally also pleased that a very beautiful building like the cigar factory was awakened from its Sleeping Beauty slumber and is being used again”, says Steffen Seibert, managing director of SAMCON.
The listed building is the former factory of cigar manufacturer J.B. Noll, which opened a branch in Lohra-Altenvers in around 1900. The multi storey half-timbered building rests on red sandstone walls, which have lovingly decorated spaces between the timber frames. At the front, however, the building is clad with the natural slate typical of the region.
Unusually for this type of construction, the approx. 200 square metre main area does not have the supporting beams that are typical of half-timbered houses. This allows for a continuous workbench at which several engineers and technicians can work at the same time. While the production hall and warehouses are already operational, development of the cultural monument is ongoing. In the medium term, sections of the administrative department are also likely to move in.
