As long as you have a driving license and you are older than 21, you can provide tuition and supervision to anyone you want. However, you are not allowed to charge for your lessons, unless you become an approved driving instructor (ADI). This means that you need to get your approval from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the main institution that is in charge with driving instructor licenses. Depending on whether you receive your approval or not, you will have the right to display a badge in the windscreen of your car, to let the others know that you can provide driving lessons. A triangular badge is granted for those who are not fully qualified, while an octagonal one is given to people that are 100% approved by DSA.
The road to becoming an ADI is not exactly easy. Only people who have had a driving license for 4 years during the past 6 years can apply for the approval of becoming a driving instructor. It is important not to have any criminal record, nor to have had your license suspended during that time. To apply, you can enter on the online websites where you can take the examinations. Keep in mind that when you apply for ADI, the first thing you will be required is a thorough security check. The Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) will perform this check and it is better if you address them in case you have any unclear background. If everything is alright, you will receive an eligibility number and you can proceed to the tests. There are three exams which you need to pass before becoming an ADI.
