Phoenix, AZ, August 12, 2011 — Can you imagine having your next knee replacement custom made for you and flown in from Belgium? If you're having a Signature Knee replacement performed by Arizona Orthopaedic Associates at Gateway, that's exactly what will happen.

Doctors at Arizona Orthopaedic Associates, which was the first group to introduce the surgery to Arizona, are recommending the knee replacement procedure more and more as they work to meet the growing number of joint replacements needed by an aging Arizona population. It's just the latest innovative procedure to be introduced by the group, which was recently recognized as one of the top 50 orthopedic practices in the country.

In June, Becker's Orthopedic and Spine Review named Arizona Orthopaedic Associates as one of the country's top 50 orthopedic practices.

Procedures like the Signature Knee are evidence of the group's commitment to quality patient care.

"Any joint replacement requires precision in order for it to work properly and last longer," said Dr. Michael Wilmink. "The Signature Knee replacement offers just that, using a custom cutting block developed from a patient's MRI."

According to Dr. Wilmink, the advantages in using the Signature Knee custom cutting block result from the precision of the fit.

"In a knee replacement, every subsequent cut is directly related to the first cut," he said. "Knowing precisely where to make that first cut ensures that everything will fall into place and the patient will receive a knee replacement that will last longer and operate more like the original joint."

This is the second groundbreaking surgical procedure introduced by the Arizona group. The first was the anterior hip replacement, which significantly reduces hospital stay times and reduces physical therapy for hip replacements. Patients who would wait days or even weeks to walk unassisted can, thanks to the anterior hip replacement, walk the next day and resume normal activities within a week.

"As the technology improves the procedures, we feel it's necessary to stay up-to-date in order to deliver the best possible care to our patients," said Dr. David Ott. "Only through medical advancements can we stay ahead of the curve."

The orthopedic group, which is located in central Phoenix, constantly works to improve the experience of its patients and currently offers on-site x-rays, MRIs, physical therapy and surgical procedures.

"It's all about improving the quality of care," said Dr. Robert Berghoff. "If patients know they can be seen without delay and receive treatment without complications, they're much more likely to trust their care to us."
