Why is it that discussion forums are so popular? What makes people want to write and argue with people they have never met nor are likely to ever meet. A forum is very different from a Blog where one person publishes a journal typically always showing the newest first. Many good quality blogs are interactive allowing comments and contributions from visitors. Although some discussion may well result this is not the same as an open forum where any member may make a posting and others may or may not respond but all contributions are made inviting discussion.

Blogs usually concentrate on one topic per posting and many online newspapers have a whole series of paid bloggers to write blogs about this and that. Often the topics written on are controversial an invite contributions from the newspaper readers. But this is not the same as a forum.

Chat rooms are another place where people may discuss things. Unfortunately chat rooms are largely so unstructured that discussion can go anywhere but often goes nowhere at all. Many chat rooms revolve around the ever expanding web cam sites which largely involve persuading a girl, clad in lingerie, to take the lingerie off. (Something the said young lady may be induced to do for some form of monetary reward). Other chat rooms may have random headings and are often dangerous as there is a large predatory pack of potential malevolent individuals who inhabit chat rooms posing as someone they are not and given half a chance will endeavor to groom or otherwise lure an unsuspecting individual into something unsavory.

But a forum works somewhat differently

A forum has a structure and requires membership. As such the access to the forum is more restrictive than to answering a blog or talking in a chat room. Also most forums archive the messages, at least for a while so that the history of the discussion can be followed by other members of the forum.

Each discussion point in the forum, known as a "thread" has its own heading and all members who are entering the forum can click down the list of thread topics and read and contribute at will.

The Forum under discussion here has an intriguing sub heading "Anarchy is freedom. Respect your freedom." Whether you subscribe to this view or not there are a number of threads which are alive and active and actively inviting international contributions.
