The recent lake effect snow storm, that crippled the city of Buffalo New York with over 5 feet of, was the cause of increased heart attack and other cardio related deaths.

The most recent unseasonably cold weather and lake effect snow storms in Buffalo cost over $40 million dollars and 17 lives. Heavy snow is known to cause fatalities however at least 2 of the fatalities from the November 2014 Buffalo “Snowpocalypse” were of unlikely origin.

Experts say the typical reasons for death during massive snow storms are lack of heat, frostbite, or inability to get necessary food and shelter during the storm. Often times the elderly and homeless become victims for these reasons. The other, often overlooked, factor is those “healthy” victims that want to get on with their lives and aren’t aware of the increased danger of heart attacks and potential cardiac issues related to the strenuous activity of shoveling snow.

“It has been shown by many, many studies that there are more heart attacks in the December-January timeframe,” says Dr. S. Sharma NY Cardiologist. The “Perfect Storm” for Heart Attacks in cardiac patients is cold air and strenuous exercise. An otherwise healthy person puts themselves at a much higher risk when these two factors come into play.

Cold weather puts increased pressure and strain on the heart by causing the arteries to constrict; in turn raising blood pressure.

It’s recommended to dress warmly and wear multiple layers in the winter time when planning on engaging in any cardio activity such as shoveling snow, engaging in workouts such as running or performing any strenuous activity outdoors.

New York Meteorologist J. D’Aleo predicts November’s snow storm is just a “preview” of what is to come this winter. It’s expected that the worst of the frigid winter weather will likely occur around Christmas and last, about six weeks, until the first week of February.
Meteorologist across the country expect several major East Coast snowstorms and below-zero temperatures that will force much of the nation into a deep freeze for as long as six weeks this winter. Experts even expect the southern states, which seldom receive snow, to be affected as well

With the expectations of upcoming dangerous weather conditions in Buffalo and the northeast, experts recommend that older people and patients with cardiac problems stay inside and have healthier residents take care of snow removal for them or contract a snow plowing service in Buffalo to dig them out. Doctors agree that cost of hiring contractors is minimal compared to the health risks.
