Bend, OR, April 10, 2012 — The Les Schwab Amphitheater and the Central Oregon Latino Partnership Program announced today the creation of Festival de Banderas (Festival of Flags), a family-friendly cultural celebration to be held from 10am – 7pm on Saturday, May 5th, 2012. At 5pm, Amalia’s Cinco de Mayo party begins, based on the popular street festival that took over downtown Bend last year. Both events will be held in the Old Mill District’s Les Schwab Amphitheater and proceeds will support the Central Oregon Latino Scholarship Fund.

Marney Smith, director for the Bend, Oregon event venue, said “We are calling this celebration ‘Latino’ in a broad reference to the people and cultures based in the Latin language. Our goal is to engage Central Oregonians and visitors in an experience never before created in Bend, and celebrate the many wonderful cultures that are a valuable part of our community. We are working with the Board of the Central Oregon Latino Partnership Program, and they are excited to bring these two events together to support scholarships for students throughout Central Oregon.”

The Festival de Banderas will open with a presentation of over 20 national flags by local children. Upholding time honored Latin traditions, the day’s events will be alive with music, children’s activities, vendors and artists, authentic food and colorful costumes, a Cantina, Folkloric dancers, and more. A tasty Chef’s Competition will finish out the day’s activities.

Jaime Aguirre, owner of Ginger’s Kitchenware, a shop located in the Old Mill District said, “We believe that artistic expression, food and music, can serve as a bridge between cultural communities.”

Starting at 5p.m., also at the Les Schwab Amphitheater, is the largest Central Oregon Cinco de Mayo party ever, hosted by Amalia’s. The evening will be filled with an incredible line-up of nationally recognized musicians including: Miami’s “Expresion Latina” and their ground shaking performance of Power-Salsa; NPR’s best artist of 2011 “Diego Garcia”, former “Elefant” front man; and finishing the night off with the high energy beats of “Hacienda!” This fiesta is certain to top Amalia’s Cinco de Mayo party held last year where thousands of people danced in the streets to the sounds of Ozomatli.

“We are determined to provide a CINCO party that will rock the stage and dance floor,” said James Orsillo, owner of Amalia’s in downtown Bend.  “CINCO de Mayo wouldn’t be a party without our famous margaritas and the coldest beer.  We appreciate our sponsors for their support and are committed to providing the community with a fun and safe annual event while supporting a great cause. After all, celebrating is part of the Amalia’s family tradition.”

Festival de Banderas will be a family-friendly celebration until 7pm, at which time the Amalia’s Cinco de Mayo event will be 21 and older only. Tickets will be available at the Ticket Mill in the Old Mill District, Amalia’s 915 NW Wall Street downtown Bend, along with other sponsor locations for only $10.00. Tickets are good for both events. Children 17 and younger are free. All members of the community are encouraged to participate in this event and celebrate the Festival de Banderas, Cinco de Mayo, all the color, music, culture and cuisine.
