What is this thing about Bulldogs? The name Bulldogge comes from the fact; In the eighteenth and nineteenth century there was great interest in blood sports and one of these was a pass time known as "bull baiting". Fairly barbaric, but basically dogs were set upon an enraged bull and had to immobilize it. One of the signs of success was when the dog actually locked its jaws onto the bull's snout and held the bull to the ground. The original Bulldog was especially bred for this purpose. A great deal of money was wagered on the various dogs. The old breeding programs were aimed at getting a very powerful, yet agile dog with a tenacious spirit and with most of the weight on the forequarters and head so it didn't break its back when being tossed about.
In the days of bull baiting this dog was a very fearsome creature indeed. Standing quite taller than today's Bulldog, and weighing between 60 and 90 pounds with a big head and broad chest and a more moderate length snout with very strong jaws. But because bull baiting was regarded as cruel there were all sorts of moves to ban it and the British Parliament finally did ban it in 1835.
But now we had a breed called the Bulldog but no longer a sport to support its fearsome and aggressive temperament, which made it unsuitable as a house pet. Shortly after the ban in 1835, a cross with a pug resulted in a somewhat smaller dog with a pushed in snout, still with its large chest but with much shorter legs. This development of the breed weighed a lot less and had a far more docile temperament.
This newer smaller breed of Bulldogge with the flattish face and shorter legs, but filled with great courage and determination is what came to be the symbol in which the British pride themselves.
Here in the US, a large number had been imported and continuation of blood lines and pedigrees has been maintained. But over the last century, breeding for exaggerated traits has created a number of hereditary problems, including hip dysplasia, difficulty breathing, skin disorders and various other ailments that plague many pure bred lines of animals.
