Dorchester, UK, February 10, 2012 — St. Valentine’s Day is a celebration of all things romantic to those who buy into the concept. For those who don’t, it is something to be ignored and disregarded. But for retailers, both on the High Street and online such as EBay sellers it is a day which simply cannot be ignored, since it provides an important post-Christmas boost, which can generate extra trade and revenue.
Online activity is now in full flight, with countless retailers, EBay sellers, small businesses and online shops posting adverts, messages and links through Social Media channels such as Facebook and Twitter, to promote their goods to the romantics out there. New ‘Valentine’s Day’ pinboards are also being created daily on the big new referral site, pinterest.com.
So what is St. Valentine’s Day worth in financial terms to the UK economy?
According to some recent figures, retailers' share of Valentine's Day spending is approximately £1.32 billion. Total spend could be as high as £2.4 billion this year. The romantic rump of we British equates to nearly 50%, so just under half of the population will fork out for Valentine’s gifts, the most popular of which is still flowers, closely followed by chocolates. Around 28% of those interviewed reported that they bought jewellery for their loved ones.
The extra activity online is closely watched by parcel delivery companies who also expect to see a spike in activity brought about by people sending gifts to loved ones who are away or living elsewhere in the UK and abroad. One parcel delivery site which also acts as a price comparison site, www.planet-parcel.com has studied the trends and a spokesman said
‘It was interesting to discover that men were more inclined to buy their romantic gifts online than women. The average spend per person was reported at just over £95, but how about this…men’s average was higher at £97.10 and women £91.91. Whether that confirms that men are more romantic than women we couldn’t possibly comment on’
These days people are looking to cut costs wherever possible so the new breed of parcel delivery companies offering cheaper alternatives for sending gifts and parcels through easy to book online sites, are hoping to increase sales during this week. It is expected that some 25 million cards will be sent and £215 million could be spent just on novelty goods such as cuddly toys, balloons and other novelty items.
