The spirited showing by the young sailors of Team Messe Frankfurt at the ongoing EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, from Manama to Muscat has been one of the highlights of the competition so far.
The exploits of the European-based crew, the youngest in the competition, have left a field of far more experienced sailors suitably impressed. Skippered by Marcel Herrera the team comprises mainly of young Olympic hopefuls, who are coming through the rigours of one of the region’s most exhilarating yachting events with flying colours.

Currently lying fourth in the overall standings, following the Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah offshore leg, Team Messe Frankfurt surprised all by finishing second to AISM, 8th time winners of the Tour du France. Earlier in the week Team Messe Frankfurt earned joint winners in the first of three inshore races and second in the next to finish second overall in the in port series held off the Abu Dhabi coastline. Taking advantage of favourable winds and balmy conditions, the youngsters left their far more experienced rivals trailing in their wake.
“We are working well together and gaining better results as we get more familiar with local conditions,” said skipper Herrera. “The team is certainly not overwhelmed by the reputation of our rivals and are keen to make our mark in this event.”
After the Ras Al Khaimah leg, AISM led by Bertrand Pace are the current front-runners ahead of BAE Systems skippered by Cedric Pouligny and Delft Challenge. The Tour continues onwards to Dibba, Mussandam and Mussanah before finishing at Muscat on 25th February.
Messe Frankfurt’s support for the team of talented young hopefuls is designed to promote the development of youth sailing as well as support the spirit of adventure and the taking on of new challenges.
